The "Zong Zi' or the much-celebrated Dragon Boat Festival comes early to me as I was one of the few lucky guests invited to taste their specially crafted three signature rice dumpling at SHANGHAI Chinese Restaurant at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur.

The festive Chinese dumplings have always been an important celebration in my life for as long as I can remember. My mother never fails to make us her delightful and delicious home made rice dumplings or 'Zong' as we called it. A nostalgic food, I grew up eating my late mom's homemade 'Zong' she specially made for me with selected few of my favourite ingredients of lean pork, salted egg yolk, fried dry shrimps, chestnuts and dhal (yellow split peas).

After my mom passed on, I was lucky to have my mother-in-law who makes mine special too while my aunt will craft some delicious sambal belacan dumplings for my family and me. So every year in the month of May and June while savouring these Chinese dumplings, they always bring back lovely memories of my beloved mother, mum-in-law and my aunt, Fei Po Po!

The glutinous rice dumplings are synonymous with the Dragon Boat Festival. Shanghai restaurant at the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur continues its tradition of creating mouth-watering Zong Zi, as they are known in Mandarin. This ancient fare consists of perfectly steamed glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and stuffed with delicious sweet or savoury fillings.

Shanghai is the only hotel Chinese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that specialises in exquisite Shanghainese cuisine. Guests can enjoy more than 100 authentic dishes originated from the Northern and Southern regions of Shanghai. The restaurant serves a sumptuous selection of Shanghainese Dim Sum and dishes for lunch and dinner.

Apart from the dumplings tasting and demonstration, we savoured some of Shanghai's signature Chinese Tea to go along with their chef's recommendation dim sum.
